What you can do near Camp Alta
The cabin is in a remarkable location 145km north of the Arctic Circle. Whilst in Europe's largest wilderness it is relatively close is the Kiruna City (15km) where you have easy access to all local amenities and shops. In the winter Camp Alta is one of Lapland's best places to view the Northern Lights (made famous worldwide by our reviews on Trip Advisor) and in summer you have the fantastic opportunity to stare with delightful fascination at Lapland's eloquent Midnight Sun. We are a short drive to Nikkaluotka and the gateway to the Swedish mountains and the Kings Trail (Kungsleden) or you can visit Kebnekaise, Sweden's largest mountain. The world famous Ice Hotel is only 10 mins drive away in the quaint historical village of Jukkasjarvi. Here you can also visit the Nutti Sami Centre, taste some traditional Sami cuisine, see the history of the Sami and visit the oldest standing Sami church in Lapland which is over 400 years old.
People from all over the world often enjoy a tranquil few days stay at Camp Alta whilst traveling to and from Lofoten. Known for its spectacular nature attractions, fjords, and mountains. Here many also enjoy the splendour of the Northern Lights and Midnight Sun. Other activities include hiking, outstanding fishing, Kayaking, and climbing. You can also visit some of the famous Norwegian war museums as well as The Viking Museum at Borg, built inside the largest archaeological find of an ancient Viking longhouse (83m) and experience the Viking Era as it really was.
Of course on Camp Alta's doorstep, there are also some fantastic fishing opportunities with the mighty Torn River, also known as The Tornio. Rising at Lake Torn (Torneträsk – Swedish) near the Norwegian border and heading through into Finland 522km in length into the Gulf of Bothnia. This is the largest free-flowing river in Lapland. Not forgetting another fishing paradise, the Kalix River (Kalixälven) both of which are home to an abundant amount of Salmon, Trout, Grayling, Whitefish & Perch depending on the season.
In the winter season at Camp Alta you can also enjoy our amazing Dog Sledding and Snowmobile tours and other winter activities (see our tour page for more details)
Only one hour’s drive from Kiruna you encounter the grandeur of Abisko natural park. Another good place to experience the wonderful nature of Swedish Lapland. The national park is famous for its hiking possibilities on the Kungsleden (Kings Trail). Winter time offers cross-county skiing, snowshoeing and other winter sports which you can also enjoy at Camp Alta. Bjorkliden and Riksgransen nearby also offer back country and downhill skiing. As Abisko is nearly 200km into the Arctic Circle, here you can also view Lapland’s Midnight Sun and in winter this is another good place to view The Northern Lights.
